thanks to all.
Read the manual! Read the manual! Read the manual.
Each move is the most important action leading you to the victory.
Never make a move when you are not relaxed physically or mentally or when you feel tired of playing.
Learn from the experts. (their matches, their articles ...)
Hello my friends! Welcome to the Kyoshi Island Contest, where you, yes you, will be able to compete in a Skud Pai Sho tournament!
I, Ultra, will be hosting this tournament so DM me on Discord if you have any questions.
General Information
This will be a classic Skud Pai Sho tournament where any players old or new can play. The format will be round robin with 6 groups of 6 people and you will play everyone in your group. The top 2 players in each group, depending on how many matches you have won, will go through to the single elimination! You have 3 days to complete your matches and if you haven't finished your match by then I will give you 1 more day to finish and if you have't finished by then I will call it a draw. In case of inactivity from your opponent or your opponent quits the tournament I will automatically hand you the match. Incase of a tie between 3 players, each 3 of you will have 1 day each to play each other and then i will take the 2 players who won those games (not the ones with the group just the matches you just played).
Sign ups start on the 21st and ends on the 1st of March.
The actual tournament will start on the 2nd of March and will probably end on the 15th of April.
The winner will receive the Tournament Winner role on the official Garden Gate Server.
All games will be hosted on The Garden Gate website: https://skudpaisho.com
After each groups have finished their matches and i have taken the top 2 players i will put them into a group where they will play each other until there the finals!!
How to sign up
Participants have to do 2 things to do in order to sign up for the tournament.
Participants must register for Kyoshi Island Contest in the tournaments tab of skudpaisho.com.
Secondly, participants will have to sign up on the toornament page: https://play.toornament.com/en_US/tourna...436350464/
Good luck everyone and remember to have fun!!
Ultra
Introducing Time Controls!
The Garden Gate supports casual Time Controls on games as a beta feature. Time controls will work together with async games - instead of being a strictly enforced clock, they are intended to be a helpful tool to those who would like to use it. Use time controls to enjoy sitting down at the same time with another player to play a quick game, or play a correspondence style game but still have a clock in place as you make moves throughout the day, only ticking as you are looking at the game.
The clock will be shown along the bottom of the page. Remember that it is just a reference and is not enforced - if time runs out, moves can still be made. Players may agree to resign if they run out of time first.
Know there have been a few bugs that some people have run into, so expect the clock to be buggy.
This is a round robin Skud tournament. A round robin is a point based tournament. You will win 2 points for winning a game, 1 point for drawing a game, and 0 points for losing a game. You will eventually be paired with everyone in the tournament.
Due to the number of games there are only 10 slots. There will be 9 rounds, 5 games per round, and a total of 45 games across the whole tournament.
The tournament will start at 21:00GST on February 1st and will last until February 27th. There will 3 days per game, if a game is not completed within those 3 days the game will be judged and an outcome will be determined.
To apply to the tournament you will need to apply on Skud Pai Sho and fill out an application Here
The reward for 1st place will be 2 initiate norms and the reward for 2nd place will be 1 initiate norm.
"Dear all guests at Roun-Jian and Gyatso's Bed & Breakfast. We are pleased to inform you that from Friday the 21st of January we will be hosting our annual tournament during our "Round-Jian and Gyatso's Ginseng Tea Party" for you to join. For those of you who have never heard of this party before: It is intriguing yet calming, bombastic but simplistic, nerve-racking and soothing. We've bought the best of best Ginseng Tea and cannot wait to share it over a couple games of Ginseng Pai Sho!
This year will be extra special because the winner of our Ginseng Pai Sho Tournament will win the desirable prize of one of the most aesthetic Ginseng tile sets on the market! Crafted by the one and only Skud. Furthermore, they will earn the 'Tournament Winner(Ginseng)' role on The Garden Gate discord server.
So sign up and get ready for some amazing Ginseng Pai Sho games! See you there!"
General Information
- This will be a round-robin style tournament - we expect two stages, but this can change depending on the number of participants.
- The winner will receive a small Ginseng tile set made by Skud. Some of the shipping will be covered, but you might need to pay some of the shipping yourself(depending on where the tile set needs to be sent). You can find pictures of the tile set on The Garden Gate discord server in #tournaments.
- The winner will also receive the 'Tournament Winner(Ginseng)' role on the official Garden Gate discord server.
- All games will be hosted at The Garden Gate website: skudpaisho.com.
- An official bracket will be hosted on Toornament.com
- Signups end on Wednesday, January 19 at 7:00 UTC.
You need to complete these 3 steps to participate in the tournament:
- Register for Round-Jian and Gyatso's Ginseng Tea Party at skudpaisho.com in the tournaments tab to the left. Remember to log in first.
- Register at Toornament.com. Provide your skudpaisho.com username and your discord username(including your unique number tag).
- Once you have completed the two steps above, you must confirm with Monk Gyatso#0883 that you will be participating in the tournament. Simply ping @Monk Gyatso#0883 in #tournaments on The Garden Gate Discord server and ask him to confirm you into the tournament, and if you have completed the first two steps properly, you will officially be in!
Tournament Format and Rules
Win = 3 points | Draw = 1 point | Loss = 0 points.
The top two players of each group will compete in a new round of games where each opponent will compete each other. The player with most points, wins the tournament.
- If your opponent should be very inactive, make sure to notify Monk Gyatso#0883 or write in your game chat.
- When you have completed a match, please report the result in #tournaments on discord.
- Sandboxing is allowed, though is discouraged for the sake of faster play and general courtesy. Please do not delay games by spending too much time in the sandbox.
- Undos are allowed. Asking for and granting undos is encouraged, though it is not technically required.
- Cursing and foul language is discouraged, though it is okay if something slips through. Outright bullying, harassment, or excessive trash talk, on the other hand, will lead to immediate disqualification from the whole tournament. We may be competing, but we should still be kind and respectful to each other - after all, it is mainly a tea party
Suppose you have a White Dragon roaming around a lotus, and it is also protected by two badgermoles; how do you attack such a threat? Well I found a method that can be useful agaisnt setups similar like shown in the image.
I highlighted the area on which the White Dragon can move so may see it more clearly:
Now count out the squares where a Sky Bison may get to, if you do it right you will notice that each Bison can reach one half of the flying area of the White Dragon, so by having two Sky Bisons on the same line as a Fire Lily, in a way that they're outside of the Dragon's range you will be able to capture the Dragon, and after that, the badgermoles that protect the opponent's WL.
The one defense I found agaisnt this is the opponent having another Bison nearby, but you can scare it away by using Wheels/Koi Fishes (you may even need to sacrifice it to the Dragon).
Do you have any other methods of dealing with Fire Lilies and Dragons?
Join in a multistage round-robin style Skud Pai Sho tournament! Score higher than other competitors in your division to stay in the event, and try to go for gold!
General Information
- This will be a multi-stage round-robin style tournament, with only some participants advancing from one round to the next.
- The winner will receive the Tournament Winner role on the official Garden Gate discord server.
- All games will be hosted at The Garden Gate website: skudpaisho.com.
- An official bracket will be hosted on Toornament.com: https://play.toornament.com/en_US/tournaments/4867640846606655488/
- Signups end on Wednesday, September 8th. To make sure you properly end up in the tournament, please sign up at least 2 full days before the tournament begins!
How to sign up:
To register for the tournament, you must sign up in three different places:
- First, you have to register for Skud Pai Sho Olympics at skudpaisho.com in the tournaments tab.
- Second, participants must register for the Toornament.com bracket here: https://play.toornament.com/en_US/tournaments/4867640846606655488/. Participants must provide their Garden Gate Username (player name at skudpaisho.com) and their discord username (including their unique number tag after their username in case there are duplicates). Players must also submit the country that they will be playing from. This option will be set to Antartica by default for players who would prefer not to to share this information.
- Once participants have completed these first two steps, they must then confirm with the tournament host (Cannoli) that they will be participating in the tournament. Simply ping @Cannoli in #tournaments on The Garden Gate Discord server and ask him to confirm you into the tournament, and if you have completed the first two steps properly, you will officially be in!
This tournament will be split up into multiple stages. The total number of stages will depend on the size of the tournament.
For each stage, the participant pool will be split evenly into different round robin divisions. Players will be scored based on how they play in their division, with certain values being tied to wins, losses, draws, and forfeits/inactivity, depending on the stage. At the end of each stage, a certain number of the highest scoring players in each division advance to the next stage, while the remaining players are eliminated. The number of players that advance to the next stage will depend on both the stage and the size of the tournament. Scores carry over from one stage to the next, so give it your all in every match!
Only 6 players will make it to the finals, which will be worth the greatest amount of points. Once the final stage concludes, the gold, silver, and bronze medalists will be chosen based on their cumulative scores, with a special Skud Pai Sho tournament winner role going to the gold medalist!
1) Matches will be shown on the Toornament website bracket, and will be created at the start of each round.
2) Rounds will last 3 days each in both brackets. In the losers bracket, players can request to begin rounds early if they wish, allowing them to better keep up with the winners bracket.
3) On stage one, a win is worth 3 points, a draw is worth 2 points, and a loss is worth 1 point. No points will be awarded for forfeits, inactivity, or disqualification for foul play. With each stage, the win values will go up by 1 point each (so a win will be worth 4 points on stage two).
4) When a match completes, one player should report the result in #tournaments on discord
5) Unfinished games due to inactivity will be decided by hosts at the end of the round. If only one player is either passively or intentionally inactive (defined by altogether absence or extensive stalling of gameplay and move making, be it accidental or purposeful), they will automatically forfeit the game, and will receive zero points. If both players are completely inactive (no moves made and no messages sent), they will both forfeit, rather than being considered a tie. Remember, losses still count for points, whereas forfeits do not, so make sure to demonstrate activity, even if your opponent does not. Activity can be demonstrated through messages in the in game chat box or public messages to your opponent on The Garden Gate Discord server regarding the game.
6) Sandboxing is allowed, though is discouraged for the sake of faster play and general courtesy. Please do not delay games by spending too much time in the sandbox.
7) Undos are allowed. Asking for and granting undos IS encouraged, though it is not technically required.
8) Cursing and foul language is discouraged, though it is okay if something slips through. Outright bullying, harassment, or excessive trash talk, on the other hand, will lead to immediate disqualification from the match, and indeed the tournament as well if instances get too egregious. We may be competing, but we should still be kind and respectful to each other.
I look forward to hosting an excellent event with you all!
Hi everyone.
I have recently started to play Pai Sho with a friend and got the idea of developing some AI agents to play the game.
I was thinking on building on the source code from the skudpaisho.com/ website which is available on github.
My first issue is that it is basically only JavaScript code which I don't know. I can read it and understand it to a certain extend. I work mainly with Python. I would like to ask, specially to @Skud, what you would suggest to integrate the JavaScript code with Python such that I can interact with the game using Python code and objects?
I was thinking of some approaches:
- Somehow start a Pai Sho local server and interact with it with Python
- Convert the JavaScript code to python with something like Js2Py (https://github.com/PiotrDabkowski/Js2Py)
- Recreate the Pai Sho game in Python and then build an AI over it.
My idea is to create several agents, make them play with each others and publish the results (best moves, piece importance, greedy vs long-term strategies, usage of harmony bonus, inverse reinforcement learning, etc). There aren't many articles on Pai Sho strategy and AI.
Any help is welcome.
The tournament will start on may 23 and end on june 20
The tournament will consist of several rounds of fire pai sho in a tournament bracket without elimination instead the final winner will be decided by a point system that rewards more points the faster you win the game. More details about how the tournament will be scored will be released in the days leading up to the tournament.
In order to participate sign up on the website and dm Turtle#9910 on discord. Thank you and good luck
Hi,
My name is Mossback (or just "Moss" for friends) and I have just finally decided myself to join the forum. I've been reading a lot lately about Pai Sho and its rules, I've watched videos, and even tried myself at a few games, but for some reason I was hesitating to join you all here.
I am not really how to go about introducing myself. I guess I'll just explain quickly where my nickname comes from and that should do it.
My friends have been calling me "Mossback" for quite some time now. I'm originally from Southern France, where the weather is hot and dry all year round. But I've always been a rain enthusiast. This search for rain has led me to move to the Western coast of Norway for a while, and then in the English Lake District. I've been constantly looking for places where it rains more than where I'm currently living (my dream would probably be to end up living in a place like Torshavn (Faroe Islands) or around Bergen (Norway)). So when my British friends, who forever dreamed of escaping the gray English skies for the sunny French beaches, figured out my motivations for moving in the UK, they started naming me "Mossback", as a person who enjoys the rainy weather so much that moss would actually end up growing on them.
So that's me.
I hope that my journey into the Pai Sho game will take me as far as possible and allow me to meet people from all corners of the world, playing a game together and many sharing a pot a tea. For as the great Iroh once said "Sharing tea with a fascinating stranger is one of life's true delights."
