The Garden Gate - Introductions

Hi,

My name is Mossback (or just "Moss" for friends) and I have just finally decided myself to join the forum. I've been reading a lot lately about Pai Sho and its rules, I've watched videos, and even tried myself at a few games, but for some reason I was hesitating to join you all here.

I am not really how to go about introducing myself. I guess I'll just explain quickly where my nickname comes from and that should do it.
My friends have been calling me "Mossback" for quite some time now. I'm originally from Southern France, where the weather is hot and dry all year round. But I've always been a rain enthusiast. This search for rain has led me to move to the Western coast of Norway for a while, and then in the English Lake District. I've been constantly looking for places where it rains more than where I'm currently living (my dream would probably be to end up living in a place like Torshavn (Faroe Islands) or around Bergen (Norway)). So when my British friends, who forever dreamed of escaping the gray English skies for the sunny French beaches, figured out my motivations for moving in the UK, they started naming me "Mossback", as a person who enjoys the rainy weather so much that moss would actually end up growing on them.

So that's me.

I hope that my journey into the Pai Sho game will take me as far as possible and allow me to meet people from all corners of the world, playing a game together and many sharing a pot a tea. For as the great Iroh once said "Sharing tea with a fascinating stranger is one of life's true delights."

Hello everyone! I am a couple weeks into playing and its already becoming a problem! Let me first express my gratitude to Skud and all the others who have made this platform possible and unleashed a great gift to us players!
I am currently working on my own physical set to recruit new players. I have come up with an innovation on the tiles, but I will show you when it's done! Tea stained wood is all I have to say about that!
I am particularly interested in studying the game theory and strategies of Skud and Vagabond, and hopefully give back a book or series of articles. If you have any particularly interesting past games or novel strategies I would be very greatful if you would send them my way! If you want to keep your secrets, there is no shame in that, but be warned I will play you eventually!

I look forward to meeting and playimg with you all.

Greetings. I just stumbled upon this and I really want to learn how to play. I hope this forum is still active. This looks really cool, I am amazed that someone actually made Pai Sho from Avatar and that its so developed. I am interested to learn Skud Pai Sho. I don't really understand how to use Garden Gate or how to play. I am in need of someone to teach me.

Hello! Thank you for being here at The Garden Gate. I'm Skud, or Zach, and I created Skud Pai Sho and made it playable online at The Garden Gate, along with other Pai Sho games I have dug up since diving into bringing Pai Sho to the physical world.

But here's a little more about Skud Pai Sho, The Garden Gate, and me.

Remember that Skud Pai Sho is based on older existing rules. It was definitely a lot of hard work over the course of months and months to get it to where it is, but most of all, I'm a fan like everyone else here.

The name "The Garden Gate" is what I'd name Skud Pai Sho if I had to rename it to remove the "Pai Sho" from the name, but it's also just such a great name for this place and community. I wonder if I should rename it to "Garden Gate Pai Sho". What do you think?

The name "Skud" is a lot like the name of a minor character named "Sud" in Avatar. If you're not sure who that is, try and find him! I used it as the name for Skud Pai Sho when I began writing the fanfiction story I'm working on slowly but surely where there's a Pai Sho-obsessed character named Skud. I then took that as the name for Skud Pai Sho and as my username as well.

Out in the real world I'm a programmer inside a company somewhere, and more importantly a husband and father. It's busy, but I have a blast playing Pai Sho and making it so everyone else can, too!

Hi, I’m Spec and am a Pai Sho fanatic. I’m not the greatest player but I have a lot of fun. He/Him btw.

I am a fairly new member of the community and am on the discord (as a lurker lol). I like to try out new strategies and am still finding my play style, I’m also working on a game variant (like seemingly half of the discord) but I’ll share more once I’ve got a finished first draft of rules..

I think that’s it? Hit me up for a game anytime and if you wanna talk strategy your best bet is pm because I tend to be a slow typer.

Hey! I'm Nahtanojrepus (alternatively Nah, Nahta, Nahtan, Nahtano, Nahtanoj, Tano, Repus or Na, but I prefer to go by Naht). I'm a pretty active member of the discord and play reasonably often on the site. I actively play skud and vagabond, with a particular liking for double vagabond, but I'd say I'm most well known for my efforts in solving solitaire, maximising simple score for several variants (something which I intend to post about down the line). I also had a part in the creation of overgrowth and cooperative solitaire, as well as an (as yet) unexplored concept for a new tile for vagabond, the koi fish which vescucci, resident actual wizard, designed.

All in all, I have an interest in essentially every variant of pai sho (except capture it can go in the trash) and am willing to theorycraft as much as I am to play.

I'm Spinx and I'm from Germany (Bavaria to be exact ).
About 2 years ago, I decided to rewatch my favourite childhood series again. Afterwards, I went to the subreddit of the series, and searched for real Pai Sho boards, and that's where I found Skud, who seemed to advertise his online Pai Sho website under every single post.^^
I thought to myself: "Might as well give this thing a try", and after a lot of games against him, many rule changes and roughly a year long break I'm back
There are many new rulesets now, but I still like regular Skud Pai Sho the most. If you ever need some advice, I'm happy to help you. Also, feel free to invite me to a game, I'll gladly accept.

Yo, I'm Matt and I've actually designed some of the tiles you may have used on the site. I designed the Pond, Bamboo, and Lion Turtle tiles found in the Ancient Oasis expansion, and a few others on the side. If you ever have any ideas for tiles send me a message! I've never really liked board games until this one and I can't wait to get my full Skud set. I don't really have a favorite variant but I have made my own called Balance Pai Sho that's similar to solitaire, but with the Lion Turtle tile as the centerpiece of the game.

As far as ice breaking stuff, my favorite element is Earth, my favorite Avatar is Kyoshi, and my favorite animal hybrid is the Sky Bison because they're super fluffy and also hella tough.
